As an employee, you can take advantage of a comprehensive benefits package. Now is the time to review your options, think about any changes in your personal situation and choose the benefits options that will best meet your needs for 2018.

Remember: You must enroll in your 2018 benefits by November 30. The choices you make during Open Enrollment will stay in effect all year—unless you experience a Qualified Life Event. That is just one more reason to take the time to choose carefully now.
Life events include:

  • Marriage, divorce, or legal separation
  • Birth or adoption of a child
  • Death of a covered participant
  • Change in your spouse’s employment status (loss or gain of a job)
  • Change in your dependent’s eligibility (i.e. loss of dependent status) 

The coverage change you make must be consistent with the qualified life event.  To make a change, your new election must be received at the Human Resources Department within 31 days of the qualified life event. Failure to make your election within the 31 day period will necessitate waiting until the next Annual Open Enrollment period. 

Medical Coverage for Dependent Children
Dependent children can be covered under your health plan until the end of the month in which they turn age 26. At that time, they will have the option of continuing their coverage through COBRA. Under COBRA, they would be responsible for paying 102% of the full cost of coverage on a month-by-month basis for up to 18 months.

What Happens If You Don’t Do Anything?

If you do not make an election for 2018, you will automatically be re-enrolled in your current 2017 elections EXCEPT for the Healthcare and Dependent Care Flexible Spending Accounts for 2018, you must enroll during the Open Enrollment period. If you are enrolled in any of these benefits in 2017 and you do not re-enroll for 2018, you will not have these benefits for the calendar year starting January 1, 2018.
