Description: Reporting to the Associate Director for Intercultural Engagement and Inclusion, the Assistant Director for LGBTQ+ Advocacy and Awareness is a full-time administrator position in the Office of Intercultural Engagement & Inclusion (IEI), within the Division of Student Affairs Office of Student Leadership and Engagement. This position has responsibilities with multicultural and lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer/questioning plus (LGBTQ+) educational programming and advocacy for Hofstra University. They include: coordinating events to foster a strong sense of community and student development within our many diverse student populations at Hofstra; implementing comprehensive outreach services for the campus community on LGBTQ+ topics; and providing educational and cultural programs with social justice and culturally focused student organizations and departments within the University. The ideal candidate will be a committed and experienced professional with knowledge of LGBTQ+ and intersectional philosophies, a demonstrated history of successful campus and community leadership, and a commitment to the holistic development of diverse student populations. The candidate must be a confident spokesperson with a demonstrated effectiveness in making significant decisions and a willingness to initiate change.
Essential Duties
• Coordinate campus wide programming and initiatives focused on LGBTQ+ identities and culture.
• Serve as a resource for issues of diversity on campus, particularly with LGBTQ+ perspectives; play an instrumental role implementing recommendations from the recent Hofstra LGBTQ+ Task Force.
• Serve as a campus advocate and resource point person for historically underrepresented student groups, including students from diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds and students that identify as being Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer or Questioning (LGBTQ+).
• Work in collaboration with all offices within the Division of Student Affairs, colleagues across the University, and members of the local community to establish a student-centered program which supports the Hofstra and Division of Student Affairs missions.
• Coordinate assessment programs that gauge satisfaction and impact of programs and events.
• Develop and maintain the departmental website, related social media venues, communication plans, and other office marketing.
• Assist the Associate Director with all aspects of the office operations and contribute to strategic planning and implementation of departmental goals and objectives.
• Collaborate with the Office of Student Leadership and Engagement in the implementation of campus wide programs and traditions.
• Serve as an active member of the Administrative Conduct Board for the Office of Community Standards, including all required training.
• Assist with the planning of office retreats and staff meetings.
• Assist the Title IX Officer for Student Issues with LGBTQ+ focused student support, programming and training.
• Serve on University and divisional committees and complete other tasks as assigned.

Supervision
• Select, train, and supervise the LGBTQ+ Life /PRISM Mentor Graduate Coordinator.
• Guide and support PRISM Mentors as they develop and implement on-going programs and services for Hofstra’s LGBTQ+ student community, including affinity groups.
• Assist in the training and supervision of student assistants.
• Assist with supervising the IEI Graduate Assistant(s).
Qualifications: • Master’s Degree in a related field (e.g., Higher Education Administration, Counseling, Education)
• A minimum of three years of increasing responsibility and leadership in a related area (LGBTQ+/ multicultural/international education, student activities, leadership, programming, etc.)
• Experience working with LGBTQ+ students and other diverse student populations, understanding their unique needs within a higher education context
• Demonstrated capacity to communicate broadly across the division and University, cultivate and sustain collegial relationships, and build unity around difficult issues; active listener, facilitator, convener, mediator, and coach
• Be an innovator—able to forge new ideas and strategies for relating academic and student life into an integrated and comprehensive student experience
• Demonstrate a flexible attitude and be comfortable leading change and continuous improvement in response to evolving market trends and best practices
• Display an openness to risk, change, and feedback; a high degree of self-confidence and the ability to face challenges calmly
• Knowledge of student development, intercultural, and leadership theories and ability to apply them appropriately, along with a commitment to continued professional development
• Display interpersonal and problem-solving skills, organizational expertise, and possess the ability to think both critically and strategically
• Demonstrated precise record keeping; experience with database maintenance and reporting, as well as other office technology
• Strong computer skills, including experience with Banner software, Microsoft Windows, Word, Excel, Access, and various social media venues
• Willingness and ability to work some evenings and weekends
