Description: Reporting to the Associate Dean of Students, the Director of Student Leadership and Engagement will be a critical team member within a dynamic office that promotes co-curricular student engagement leadership development and campus-wide programs and traditions. This student-centered position is responsible for supporting the mission of the Office of Student Leadership and Engagement (OSLE), the Division of Student Affairs (DSA), and Hofstra University. This is an onsite position; work for this role is performed on campus.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

• Directly supervises one full-time assistant director responsible for Fraternity and Sorority Life and one graduate assistant for evening and weekend programming.
• Indirectly supervises a second graduate assistant and student workers.
• Provide vision, coordination, and oversight for all student leadership initiatives, including the Blue & Gold Leadership Program, leadership conferences and summits, trainings and retreats, and recognition events.
• Coordinate advising, registration, promotion, and support of over 200 diverse student organizations.
• Develop guidelines and training for student groups and advisors; organize and manage all applicable leadership software for student organizations and advisors.
• Serve as program advisor to a diverse group of student organizations on campus and assist with management and advising of the Student Government Association.
• Oversee the development of a vibrant and responsible fraternity and sorority life community.
• Collaborate with OSLE and student leaders in the planning and implementation of campus wide programs and traditions, including Welcome Week, Fall Festival, MusicFest, 9/11Memorial, etc.
• Collaborate in the development of the annual operating budget and ensure that University resources are utilized efficiently, ethically, and effectively. Monitor and maintain budgetary controls and accountability.
• Serve as an active member of the Administrative Conduct Board for the Office of Community Standards including all required training.
• Serve on University and DSA committees as assigned; attend all applicable training sessions.
• Assist in all aspects of office operations, including contributions to strategic planning and assessment efforts.
• Help develop new initiatives and student traditions based on current research and best and next practices in the field.
• Fulfill other related duties as assigned.
• Extended hours will be required as needed, including evening, early morning and weekend responsibilities.

Qualifications: Master’s degree required in a related field (e.g., student affairs, education, counseling) required. Minimum of three to five years of full-time experience in a related area (student activities, leadership, programming, orientation, etc.). Experience training, mentoring, and developing a diverse staff. Excellent organizational and administrative skills, including budget management. Ability to effectively supervise professionals, graduates, and undergraduate student staff. Knowledge of student development theories, practices, and programs that enhance and integrate the relationship between student and academic affairs. A demonstrated commitment to the holistic development of diverse student populations. Experience implementing assessment cycles of student learning and strategic planning for student engagement and development. Excellent interpersonal, problem-solving, written and oral communication/presentation skills. Ability to work effectively and ethically with a diverse population of students, University faculty/administrators, and community members. Ability to show maturity and leadership in the management of conflicts and crises. Collegial interpersonal style with demonstrated ability to work collaboratively. Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, Access, Banner, Adobe Photoshop, desktop publishing and web content management system software. Prior experience with Campus Labs highly desirable. Ability to learn new software as needed. Have strong quantitative and analytical skills and have comfort with appropriate technologies including social media. Have a passion for and experience with working students, families, and colleagues of diverse backgrounds. Exercise judgment and independent initiative. Handle time-sensitive matters that require concise problem-solving and a high degree of confidentiality. Articulated communication skills (oral and written) with diverse populations of students, colleagues, families, and external audiences. Ability to cultivate and sustain collegial relationships; be an active listener, facilitator, convener, mediator, and coach. Demonstrated flexibility, resiliency, and creativity and leadership and supervisory capabilities. High emotional intelligence and human relations skills to maintain positivity and organization in a dynamic and fast-paced environment. Innovation to forge new ideas and strategies. Ability to manage multiple projects and responsibilities and perform highly detailed work. Have a collaborative disposition and possesses the ability to think both critically and strategically.
