The Sustainability Studies program at Hofstra University focuses on a number of issues related to sustainability. Sustainability can be broadly defined as the wise use of resources now to ensure opportunities for future generations. Sustainability focuses on areas of economic and social equity and development and the environment.

Students study a number of topics including renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, waste management, and urban planning. Courses also address other areas of sustainability including economics, policy, equity, entrepreneurship, and ethics.

Our BA and BS degrees and the minor in Sustainability Studies offer interdisciplinary coursework in 19 departments, including Management, Sociology, Philosophy, Chemistry, Economics, and Engineering.

The Bachelor of Science in Sustainability Studies provides a strong scientific foundation for addressing sustainability issues. The Bachelor of Arts allows students to explore economic and social issues associated with sustainability. Both majors are extremely applicable to a range of occupations.

The Masters in Sustainability gives students the opportunity to complete advanced coursework and research with a faculty member. Students with a background in the sciences, social sciences, and humanities will find a home in the Department where they can work with one of over 30 faculty mentors.

The program in Sustainability Studies at Hofstra teaches students to critically evaluate current norms in resource management, urban planning, and sustainable development and use their skills to make contributions and add value to the rising field of sustainability.
