English Language Program (ELP)

The English Language Programis designed to help non-native speakers of English who are accepted to the University to pursue an undergraduate or graduate degree to improve their English skills. Courses in English as a second language are offered at the beginning, intermediate, and advanced levels. Some of these courses carry liberal arts credit for the bachelor's degree. Such courses appear below in bold type.

  • ELP 011A: Introductory Reading Comprehension (3 semester hours)
  • ELP 012A: Introductory Grammar (3 semester hours)
  • ELP 013A: Introductory Conversation (3 semester hours)
  • ELP 015A: Introductory Composition (3 semester hours)
  • ELP 021B: Intermediate Reading Comprehension (3 semester hours)
  • ELP 023B: Intermediate Oral Communication (3 semester hours)
  • ELP 024B: Intermediate Language Lab and Tutorial (3 semester hours)
  • ELP 025: Intermediate Composition (3 semester hours)
  • ELP 031: Advanced Reading Comprehension (3 semester hours)
  • ELP 032C: Sentence Structure Workshop and Tutorial (2 semester hours)
  • ELP 033C: Advanced Oral Communication (3 semester hours)
  • ELP 035: Advanced Composition (3 semester hours)
  • ELP 036: Topics in American Culture (3 semester hours)

During the registration period preceding the start of classes each fall and spring semester, as well as during summer orientation, students have the opportunity to take the ELP placement test to determine what level, if any, of the ELP is appropriate to their needs. Most students can begin taking courses toward their degree in the first semester of study at Hofstra, together with the required ELP courses determined by the results of their placement test.
