Donato Ndongo-Bidyogo

Monday, April 3rd, 2006

The Department of Romance Languages and Literatures and the Hofstra College of Liberal Arts and Sciences invite you to a two-part presentation by the African scholar, novelist and intellectual.

Donato Ndongo-Bidyogo (Equatorial Guinea, West Africa, 1950) is one of the most prominent intellectuals from his country, and the author of several major works of history (History and Tragedy of Equatorial Guinea (1977), Spain in Africa (1998), The Next Africa (1999)). He is also a well-regarded novelist known for contesting both the colonial experience and European legacies and the dictatorships that followed the country's independence in 1968 and continue to the present day. His novels include Las tinieblas de tu memoria negra (1987), Los poderes de la tempestad (2000) and his most recent El metro (2006). He is also the author of two comprehensive antologies: Literatura Guineana (1984) and Antología de la Literatura de Guinea Ecuatorial (2000). His presentations are intended to bring awareness to an often marginalized area of the Spanish-speaking world, and to contextualize his country within larger debates concerning post-colonial Africa.
