In Focus: Craig Beale '11
Tell us about your path to Hofstra University.
I earned my B.A. in English Literature and Linguistics from Stony Brook University. While studying during my junior year, I shadowed a Speech-Language Pathologist. From there I decided to pursue applying to graduate school. I decided to use my knowledge of literature and the phenomenon of language in a more clinical than academic setting. I needed a few prerequisite classes not available at Stony Brook. During my last semester at Stony Brook, I took the necessary prerequisites at Hofstra. I really liked the professors and atmosphere of the school, so when I was accepted into the graduate program, I wanted to attend.
What opportunities have you taken advantage of at Hofstra?
At Hofstra, I was able to work as a Graduate research assistant and participate in independent clinical research with a faculty mentor. I received a graduate fellowship during my second year, which was a huge help as I prepared to graduate.
Did you encounter any inspiring faculty at Hofstra?
Every professor in the Communication Sciences and Disorders program inspired me in some way. The Joan and Arnold Saltzman Community Services Center faculty especially inspired and encouraged me. Two particular mentors I have learned from are Dr. Bloom and Wendy Silverman.
How has your experience prepared you for your future job search?
My Hofstra experience prepared me very well for future employment. The reference I received from Wendy Silverman was crucial to me obtaining my current position. Also the clinical externship experiences that Ms. Silverman arranged made me the ideal candidate for my job. In fact, everyone with whom I graduated found a job in the field within 6 months.
Tell us about your internship experiences.
My first internship was at the Saltzman Community Services Center, located on campus. There my confidence was built and I learned very basic clinical skills. My second internship was at a developmental pre-school. My clinical supervisor was a Hofstra alumnus and became a great mentor. My third externship was at a public elementary school. This experience was also very influential in my development. Finally, my fourth internship was at Stony Brook University Hospital and Medical Center. There I learned valuable clinical skills and found many resume boosters. Wendy Silverman was instrumental in helping me find all of my internships.
What advice would you give to others considering attending Hofstra?
Make sure you are driven. Take advantage of every opportunity that comes your way. Never say no, if you can help it. Make sure to arrange your finances for the two year graduate commitment because your energy should be directed at your education and unneeded distraction could interfere.
