Why the Information Technology Executive Board of Visitors (EBoV) Student Mentoring is Important
By Lee Bogner, Zarb School of Business EBoV board member since 2011
ECommerce Architect at Johnson & Johnson,
Adjunct Professor of Information Systems & Business Analytics, Hofstra University
Since joining the Zarb EBoV, I’ve had the pleasure of mentoring multiple students, listening to their interests, concerns and aspirations, answering questions and when asked, offering advice.
Mentoring is a two-way benefit. The act of being there for students, sharing guidance and experience is vital to students as they enter the working world for their very first time. Mentoring has been a very rewarding experience for me. You will knowingly smile reflecting on their questions, recalling your first experiences in the working world, and sharing how to handle situations now natural to you but unknown to our students and young alumni. Resume reviews, job search tactics, letters of reference, idea storming and just plain listening are some of the key benefits we bring as mentors.
I encourage all the IT Executive Board of Visitors board members to participate as mentors. I assure you, you will discover mentoring a revitalizing experience for yourself.
I’d like to share highlights of a few of my mentees:
Bennett BBA IT/QM 2013
Zarb Information Technology graduate and former Vice President of Hofstra Information Technology Association (HITA), Bennett returned to his native Boston and is working for Symantec Corp, the security applications software company, received his first promotion in December after 6 months on the job and is now an SQA Associate Engineer. He is working on automation testing, server work, creating demo apps and wrapping third party applications - a real mix of projects, which he enjoys. Bennett needed help with his resume, being concerned about his perceived lack of experience. We talked about his school projects, club and intern activities and restructuring his resume to bring forward his abilities and interests. Bennett is a focused technologist and rising star.
Dan BBA IT/QM 2011, MBA 2012
Upon graduation Zarb and LeMoyne (my alma mater) Dan is an ERP software consultant at Cohesive Information Solutions where he works on Maximo Asset Management Software implementations for General Electric (GE) and is currently working with Tennessee Valley Authority Nuclear Power in his hometown Atlanta.
Jonathan BBA 2013 Information Technology and Entrepreneurship
Jonathan is a Zarb graduate and former president of Hofstra University Start Ups (HUSU) club. He is the Co-founder and Editor of College Startup, an independent start-up news site dedicated to covering entrepreneurial people, companies, and events emerging from colleges and universities across the United States. Jonathan was looking for guidance on working with speakers and running event operations for his HUSU conference, in addition to how to position these skills into his job search. Within one month of graduation, Jonathan landed a position at the renowned research firm, The NPD Group on Long Island, where he is a Loyalty and Rewards Specialist. Jonathan has an expertise in analytics, natural leadership and public speaking skills which I am certain he will apply in his new role.
Happy Mentoring!

Elite Grads in Business Flock to Tech
Elite business-school graduates are increasingly heading to work in technology over finance as the lingering aftereffects of the financial crisis—along with Wall Street's long hours and scaled-back pay—sends newly minted M.B.A.s elsewhere. At Harvard Business School, 18% of job-seeking students landed tech-sector spots this year, up from 12% in 2012. A similar shift is under way at the business schools at Yale University and Cornell University, where the share of graduates going into tech more than doubled over the past two years.... | more | (login may be required)
