New York State Commission on Local Government Efficiency & Competitiveness Hearings at Hofstra University

The New York State Commission on Local Government Efficiency & Competitiveness held two days of hearings at Hofstra University July 24-25, 2007 to solicit ideas and suggestions as to how to streamline local government. Commission members heard from Nassau County Executive Tom Suozzi and Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy and Hofstra President Stuart Rabinowitz as well as local officials and residents. The hearings were hosted by the National Center for Suburban Studies at Hofstra University®.

The Commission was established in April 2007 by Gov. Spitzer to look at ways of consolidating some of the more than 4,200 taxing jurisdictions in New York State. After holding a series of hearings around the state, the Commission will report its recommendations by April 15, 2008.

The Commission consists of 15 members and is chaired by former Lieutenant Governor Stan Lundine, who also served as a U. S. representative and as mayor of Jamestown. Richard V. Guardino, Jr., Vice President for Business Development and Dean of the Center for Suburban Studies, is a member of the Local Government Study Group which was formed to assist the Commission. The Study Group was organized to directly link academics and other local government experts to the Commission.
