Entrepreneurship Assistance Center Program

BE YOUR OWN BOSS - START AND EXPAND YOUR OWN BUSINESS

Do you want to start or grow your own business? Enroll in a ten-week program at Hofstra University to learn how to expand your market and manage your finances. Participants are eligible for the Capital One pitch competition with $5,000 total prize money at the end of the course and will receive a certificate of competition. Participants will receive 60 hours of training for $550; scholarships are available based upon eligibility.

Course Outline

1. Workshops: Over the course of 18 workshops, you will learn how to:

  • Draft your Business Model Canvas and conduct customer discovery to ensure your product fits with the needs of the marketplace.
  • Create a customer profile and conduct a competitive analysis.
  • Utilize the latest digital marketing techniques, social media, branding, and media strategies to grow your business.
  • Create an executive summary and pitch presentation to communicate your value proposition
  • Perfect your sales strategies.
  • Determine forms of ownership.
  • Apply for loans, assess credit, and obtain insurance.
  • Create an operating budget for your business.
  • Manage your employees.
  • Develop financial management skills including recordkeeping and financial statements.

2. Mentoring – Participants will receive at least 10 hours of technical assistance from the Hofstra EAC’s experienced network of entrepreneurs, EAC staff and instructors, banking, loan, insurance, and legal experts. Participants will also enroll in Business Mentor NY.

3. MWBE certification assistance: Eligible companies will receive counseling and technical assistance on MWBE certification through New York State Empire State Development.

4. Participants will leave the course will the following to help support the growth of their business:

  • Executive Summary
  • Business Model Canvas
  • Pitch Presentation
  • Data from Customer Discovery Interviews
  • Financial Statements

Background

Since 1991, more than 1,407 entrepreneurs have enrolled in the Entrepreneurship Assistance Center. Their businesses were in the planning stage or already in existence and ready for expansion.  This program is offered annually in the spring and fall on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. (click on schedule above for a full last of dates).  The program cost is $550 fee and a $275 deposit along with an application (see above) is required to register for the program.  Scholarships are available and may be awarded at the conclusion of the program to select participants; qualifications for scholarship consideration include participants who exemplify a strong commitment and dedication to their business venture, attend all workshops and submit all assignments.

Meet the Instructors

TONI-ANN KOBEL

Toni- Ann Kobel is a Senior Sales Executive at Total Dollar Insurance, Port Washington, NY and has been a licensed Property & Casualty Insurance broker for over 25 years. She works with business owners and individuals to create insurance programs that protect their assets through exposure identification and risk analysis. The insurance programs include workers’ compensation, general liability, property insurance, errors & omissions, automobile liability, cyber liability, employment practices liability and statutory disability insurance. Toni-Ann has been the insurance instructor for Hofstra University's Entrepreneurial Assistance Program since 2005.

DEBORAH MIRAGLIA

B.S. Business Administration – St. John’s University. Deborah Miraglia, Miraglia Associates, Certified Woman Owned Business, has over thirty years of consulting experience assessing financial systems, recommending and implementing strategic plans for improving internal accounting, developing unqualified audits and increasing internal controls. As controller of a software development company, she helped create a financial management package for architects/engineers integrating the general ledger with project management. Clients include small and mid-size businesses in diversified industries - architectural, construction, engineering, hospitality, medical, not for profit, and real estate. Deborah is a Certified QuickBooks Pro Advisor, teaching skills implementing the software and trouble shooting for clients resulting in more effective practices with their internal accounting systems.

JOHN SULLIVAN

B.A. SUNY Binghamton; JD - Duquesne University School of Law. John “Jack” Sullivan is the founder of Sullivan & Associates Law Firm, PC. Jack has over nineteen years of experience in tax and corporate law and advises companies of all sizes from the Fortune 500 to well established mid-sized companies, along with startups, and development stage companies. His services for companies includes all facets of federal, state and local tax and business planning, including choice of entity and company formation, contract drafting and review, mergers and acquisitions, nexus analysis and minimization, corporate restructuring, acquisition, due diligence, audit representation, and tax compliance, along with Tax Director and General Counsel services.

MITCH TOBOL

B.S. Graphic Design – SUNY College at Buffalo. Mitch Tobol is a partner at CGT Marketing, LLC, an innovative marketing agency focused on helping companies achieve their goals by using intelligent strategies and creative tactics. He has assisted many large and small businesses in developing and improving their marketing strategies over the past 30 years. Mr. Tobol is an expert in traditional and social media marketing and presents Social Media Workshop Series and Operation Downtown small business seminars each spring and fall. He is the Marketing instructor for eleven EAC workshops for two sessions annually.
