The Wilbur F. Breslin Center for Real Estate Studies, Continuing Education at Hofstra University, The Town of Hempstead, United Way and EmPower Solar sponsored a free informational session for victims of superstorm Sandy and all homeowners on July 25, 2013 at the Monroe Lecture Center. Panelists included:
Mark Schwarz, Town of Hempstead, an expert on building and permitting requirements, Mr. Schwartz spoke about rebuilding damaged homes to conform to local building codes. He presented information about new energy codes on the local and New York state levels and additional homeowner issues.
Rick Wertheim, United Way, Mr. Wertheim discussed site preparation, including the “building envelope” (air sealing, insulation, energy, efficiency), mechanical systems (plumbing, electrical, heating/cooling and ventilation) and “green” details (water, interior, furnishings).
Ed Olsen, EmPower Solar, Mr. Olson focused on “Solar 101”, net metering, LIPA Solar Pioneer Program, economic benefits and financing options and tips on hiring a solar contractor.
Patricia Latshaw, Wright Flood, Principal Flood Coordinator, spoke about the rules, regulations and compliance issues relating to the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) as well as updated changes to the NFIP since Superstorm Sandy.
