David Filderman Gallery, 9th floor, Axinn Library
In April 1865 the United States was stunned to hear of President Abraham Lincoln's assassination. After ceremonies at the U.S. Capitol, the funeral train with Lincoln's body left Washington, D.C. and on April 24 arrived in New York City. The funeral procession is the subject of this exhibition.
Among the numerous items featured in the exhibition are bills from the musical bands that performed, artists, newspapers advertisements, as well as from the hotels where various dignitaries stayed. Also included are newspapers, weekly magazines, lithographs, political cartoons, a map from 1865 depicting the funeral route and a variety of books.
