Bio

Philip Stoecker (Ph.D., Music Theory, The Graduate Center of the City University of New York, 2003; M.M., Music Theory, University of Ottawa, 1997; B.M., Music Theory and Composition, The Ohio State University, 1995) is Associate Professor at Hofstra University, where he has been teaching since 2008. His previous position was at Oberlin College Conservatory, where in 2008 he received the “Best Instructor Professor Props” award. His research interests include post-tonal theory and analysis, the music of Thomas Adès and George Perle, and music theory pedagogy. In 2004 he received the “Barry S. Brook Dissertation Award in Music” from the Graduate Center, CUNY.

He has presented papers at meetings of the Society for Music Theory, Music Theory Midwest, Music Theory Society of New York State, the First International Conference on Mathematics and Computation in Music, the Arnold Schönberg Symposium, and other regional and international conferences. His articles and reviews have appeared or are forthcoming in Journal of the Arnold Schönberg CenterJournal of Music Theory, Journal of Music Theory PedagogyMusic Analysis, Music Theory and AnalysisMusic Theory OnlineMusic Theory Spectrum, and Theory and Practice.

He has served the Music Theory Society of New York State in several capacities: Chair of the Program Committee (2015), a member of the Program Committee (2016), secretary (2010–2013), and Member of the Board (2009–2010). In addition to service on Music Theory Midwest as Chair of the Program Committee (2008) and on the Program Committee of the South Central Society of Music (2004), he is the secretary for the Society for Music Theory (SMT) and was a member of its Professional Development Committee (2013–2016).
