Scott T. Lefurgy

Associate Professor of Chemistry

Degrees

PHD, 2007, Columbia University; MA, 2005, Columbia University; BMUS, 1999, University Michigan; BS, 1999, University Michigan

Bio

Dr. Lefurgy received his PhD in Biological Sciences from Columbia University. He did his Thesis research with Dr. Virginia Cornish in the area of chemical biology. His main projects were in the area of examining enzyme activity in vivo through selection systems. He did postdoctoral research in the laboratory of Dr. Thomas Leyh at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. His work there examined the mevalonate pathway enzymes of Streptococcus pneumoniae as an antibiotic target using a medicinal chemistry approach. He also worked on studying binding to multi-subunit enzymes (sulfotransferases) and developed a mathematical tool to analyze data obtained in cooperative enzyme systems.

Teaching Interests

Course-Based Undergraduate Research Experience in biochemistry laboratory.

Research Interests

Structure-function relationships in Class C beta-lactamases. Substrate specificity of enzymes. Antimicrobial resistance.
