Bio
Professor Nicholas Mercado, Program Director/Co-Executive-in-Residence, is a clinical ethicist in Northwell Health's Division of Medical Ethics, Assistant Professor of Medicine at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell, and Adjunct Assistant Professor of Health Professions at Hofstra University. Professor Mercado has extensive higher education administration experience. When hired at the Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine in 2013, his primary responsibilities included supporting and implementing the medical school's innovative curriculum, assisting in the LCME accreditation process, and helping to implement and design assessments.
In his current position at Northwell Health, Professor Mercado conducts clinical ethics consultations, sits on numerous hospital ethics committees, and participates in divisional research projects. He is also curriculum coordinator and instructor for the medical school's ethics and professionalism curriculum and teaches communication skills and public health to medical students. He is a nationally recognized healthcare ethics consultant certified through the American Society for Bioethics and Humanities.
Professor Mercado graduated with his B.S. in Community Health Education at the State University of New York at Potsdam in 2012, his Master of Public Health from Hofstra University in 2015 and completed a professional certificate in Clinical Bioethics from the Hofstra University Bioethics Center. Professor Mercado is currently pursuing a Doctor of Public Health (DrPH) degree at New York Medical College specializing in Health Policy and Management. In his spare time, he spends time with family, watches/critiques movies, performs on stage, and plays piano.
