Valerie J. Rizzuto

Adjunct Instructor of Global Studies and Geography

MA, 2013, CUNY Hunter Coll; BA, 2009, Hofstra Univ; AD, 2007, SUNY Nassau CC

An alumnus of Hofstra University, Professor Rizzuto has been an adjunct faculty member for the Department of Global Studies and Geography since January, 2014.

She earned a Master's degree in Geography from Hunter College and has done extensive fieldwork in Mauritius for her MA thesis. She used a mixed methods approach to measure availability and equity in domestic water supply in an island setting.

Currently pursuing her doctoral degree in Geography and Environmental Science at the University of South Florida, her dissertation research focuses on the differences in potable water policies between independent and non-independent islands. This is a quantitative analysis, using the islands of the Mascarene Archipelago as the main study area. The results of the final analysis aim to be applicable beyond the island group of the study area, thus initiating further research regarding implementation of policies surrounding natural resource use in a post-colonial island setting.

Her research interests are many and include: Island studies, Physical Geography/Geomorphology, Integrated Coastal Zone Management, colonial legacies and resource use, effects of and adaptations to climate change on humans and endemic species, and water resource management.

Professor Rizzuto is an avid bird watcher, guitar player, and sports spectator, as well as having a passion for cooking. She has studied French while living in Montreal for two years, and is also a beginning Mauritian Creole speaker.
