Bio

Russell Chun teaches multimedia storytelling, design, and data journalism.

His research in visual communication has been published in Visual Communication Quarterly and The Journal of Visual Literacy, where he serves as an associate editor. He investigates effective data visualization and information design. He is co-editor of the compendium, Fake News: Real Issues in Modern Communication published in 2020 by Peter Lang. He is the author of books on Adobe multimedia software for Adobe Press. His writing has appeared in Salon.com, Poynter, PBS MediaShift, MacWorld, and SBS Digital Design. As an independent developer, he’s provided instructional design, art direction, storyboarding, and multimedia to organizations such as AsiaSociety, DNAInfo.com, NYTimes.com, QuantaMagazine.org, Pearson Education, and others.

His previous teaching appointments have been at the Craig Newmark City University of New York Graduate School of Journalism, the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, and at the University of California at Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism. He was the Department Head of the Illustration program at Sessions College for Professional Design. In 2015, he sat on the Data Advisory Group at Macaulay Honors College at the City University of New York to help build their data science curriculum. In 2006-2009, he was the interactive trainer at News21, a Carnegie/Knight-funded national initiative to improve the quality of journalism education in the United States

He is the 2019 recipient of the Lawrence A. Stessin Prize for Outstanding Scholarly Publication.
