Joshua Hecht

Joshua Hecht was born in New York City, the son of Russian immigrants. He studied voice with Rosa Ponselle and made his operatic debut as Pere des Grieux in Massenet?s MANON with the Baltimore Opera Company. Soon after, he joined the New York City Opera and from there was invited to sing leading roles with opera companies throughout the United States.

Between 1972 and 1996 Joshua Hecht lived in Europe, first in Italy then Germany. Further travels have taken him to Israel, Australia, Canada, and South America. In all, he has appeared with more than fifty opera companies. In the United States these include the companies of Baltimore, Boston, Cincinnati, Fort Worth, Houston, Miami, Pittsburgh, San Diego, San Francisco, Seattle, the New York City Opera and the Metropolitan Opera. In Europe, he performed in the opera theaters of Barcelona, Bordeaux, Frankfurt, Palermo, at the Wiener Staatsoper, Teatro San Carlo in Naples, Teatro Verdi (Pisa and Trieste), Teatro dell?Opera and Terme di Caracalla in Rome, Teatro Bellini in Catania and at the Holland festival, amongst others. During his career, he has had the pleasure of working with an astonishing range of distinguished colleagues including conductors Bernstein, Boehm, Sargent, Adler and Stokowski, as well as singers Tebaldi, Pons, Nilsson, Caball?, Freni, Vickers, Sutherland, Bumbry, Horne, Corelli, Del Monaco, Pavarotti, Domingo, Tucker, Warren, Bastianini, Milnes and Merrill. Among the more important roles in his repertoire are Mephisto in Gounod?s Faust, Jochanaan in Salome, Michonnet in Adriana Lecouvreur, Don Alfonso in Cosi Fan Tutte, the title roles in Don Giovanni and The Flying Dutchman, Scarpia in Tosca, Iago in Otello, Zaccaria in Nabucco and Philippo 11 in Don Carlos. Beside his operatic and concert appearances, Mr Hecht has performed a great number of roles in Music Theater throughout the United States and Europe.

While resident in Frankfurt, Germany, Joshua Hecht taught many of Europe's leading singers under the auspices of Opera Frankfurt and later established the Hecht Studio in New York. Each year since 1995, he has traveled to Australia at the invitation of Opera Australia to work with its principal artists as guest voice teacher in residence.
