John Castonguay

Bio

Dr. Castonguay is from Yorktown, Virginia. He received his Ph.D. in Accounting from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. He also holds a BBA in Accounting and a Master of Science in Accounting from James Madison University (Harrisonburg, VA).

After completing his Master’s degree, Dr. Castonguay obtained his CPA license in Virginia. He then went to work for PricewaterhouseCoopers, LLP in their Richmond, Virginia office as an assurance associate. While at PwC, his primary clients were financial service firms and manufacturing firms. He continues to provide consulting services and litigation support to private institutions.

Dr. Castonguay’s research reflects his experience as an auditor and his interest in corporate governance. His dissertation examines whether audit committees comprised of more overboarded directors can effectively monitor the financial reporting quality of the companies they represent. He also has conducted research into companies that are targeted by activist hedge funds and companies that experience a merger of their audit firm with another audit firm. He has presented his research at the AAA Auditing Section midyear meeting and at the Deloitte Doctoral Consortium.

Dr. Castonguay is a member of the American Accounting Association and Virginia Society of CPAs. He is an alumnus of Beta Gamma Sigma and Pi Kappa Alpha International Fraternity. His hobbies include running marathons, playing beach volleyball, and reading political non-fiction books.
