Bio

Andrea Libresco is professor in the Department of Teaching, Learning, and Technology, at Hofstra University, where she teaches prospective and current teachers at the graduate and undergraduate levels how to teach social studies.  She also teaches at the doctoral level, in the Honors College, is head of the Minor in Civic Engagement, and was named Distinguished Teacher of the Year in 2005. She was a high school social studies teacher and lead teacher for elementary social studies in the public schools, and was named Secondary Teacher of the Year by the Long Island Council for the Social Studies in 1997. She has written on a variety of topics, including standardized testing, exemplary social studies teachers, children's literature, civic engagement, and women's history. Books include: Every Book is a Social Studies Book: How to Meet Standards with Picture Books, K-6 , Exemplary Elementary Social Studies: Case Studies in Practice, and Notable Books, Notable Lessons: Putting Social Studies Back in the K-8 Curriculum; and she was co-editor of the national journal, Social Studies and the Young Learner.

She received her B.A. in History and Political Science from Swarthmore College, her Master's in Education from Brown University, and her Doctorate in Education from Columbia University.
