Faculty Policy Series #32

Classified Research

  1. Hofstra University should accept or administer external contracts or grants for research projects only when the purpose is to produce results which will be freely available and freely publishable in the ordinary manner of open research in the relevant discipline.

  2. University personnel and students who determine that they require access to classified material for the more effective pursuit of their academic research may, as individuals, apply for and receive security clearances and, therefore, become individually responsible for classified material under applicable federal statutes. In their individual capacity they may serve as consultants and, in this capacity, may process reports on classified or restricted projects for sponsoring agencies. Faculty members are urged to make such decisions with great care, since it is clear that restrictions on their ability to communicate freely with colleagues, research students, and classes may result in their diminished participation in the academic community.
