Welcome/Move-In - Fall 2019

Thursday, August 29, 2019 is the start of Welcome Week for residential and commuting first-year and transfer students and is the Welcome Day for parents and families. For more information about the Welcome Week Program for STUDENTS, visit hofstra.edu/welcomeweek. Both commuting and residential families are cordially invited to attend the parent and family program on August 28, 29 and/or 30. The center of the program is the President's Welcome Convocation on Thursday at 2:45 p.m.

The residential students learn the move-in time in the housing assignment message emailed to their Hofstra Pride email account. Commuting students check in at noon. Breakfast/lunch/dinner are available for purchase at the dining facilities on campus, including Mack Student Center Dining Room and Bits & Bytes. A complete schedule for Hofstra's dining facilities is at hofstra.edu/dining. If you need a hotel room, you may consult our list of nearby hotels. If you want to register for Hofstra Fall Festival - Family Weekend, please visit hofstra.edu/fw.

Orientation for Families of Student-Athletes

Right after their student-athletes move in and start their student program, the family members are invited to join the staff of Parent and Family Programs to learn what to expect in the first weeks of the fall semester, what resources are available to your student and how you, parents and family members, can stay engaged and informed at Hofstra University. Please don’t forget to subscribe to Family Link e-newsletter at hofstra.edu/familylink. This orientation will be especially helpful to those parents who did not attend this summer’s Family Orientation. Families of student-athletes are also invited to participate in the Welcome Day program, tomorrow, Thursday, August 29.

Student and Family Check-In

Intramural Fields, North Campus 
Resident students move in according to their assigned time in their emailed housing assignment. Commuting students check in at noon. Under the Parent and Family Programs tent, you may register for the Fall Festival - Family Weekend, write a message to your student to be delivered the second week of classes, and view the photo collages of your students' childhood years. Yes, we have plenty of tissues. We welcome you, give you the program for the Welcome Day and answer your questions.

Family Mini-Orientation
Plaza Rooms, Mack Student Center, North Campus
If you did not attend Family Orientation this summer, please come to this brief version of the orientation program. Please be prepared to say goodbye to your student before the Welcome Convocation.

Welcome Convocation
David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex, North Campus
Before the Convocation, please say goodbye to your student. Join Hofstra University President Stuart Rabinowitz and other University leaders as they welcome new students and families to the Hofstra community. Students will sit together and apart from their families. After Convocation, students follow their Welcome Week Leaders and start the exciting student program of the Welcome Week. Your student will be engaged all through the Labor Day weekend (August 29-September 2).

Families celebrate this new stage of their family's life with other parents and family members, Parent Council members, faculty, administrators and staff.

The Welcome Week takes place August 29-September 2 and involve students in events and sessions throughout the Labor Day weekend. 

FRIDAY, August 30, 2019

How to Mentor Your Emerging Adult
Greenhouse, Lower Level, Mack Student Center
Now that your student is in college, how will your parenting role change? Diane Herbert, dean of the Center for Academic Excellence, Merry McVey-Noble, assistant clinical director of Student Counseling Services, Julie Yindra, director of Student Access Services, and Branka Kristic, director of Parent and Family Programs, lead this interactive workshop to discuss the developmental milestones your student is going through and examine which parenting methods are effective with young and emerging adults.

Please note that you will not reconnect with your student on Friday. Students follow their Welcome Week Program. 

First day of classes is Tuesday, September 3, 2019. 

Upper-Class Move-In: Sophomores, Juniors, Seniors

Returning undergraduate students are moving into residence halls starting with Saturday, August 31, 2019. Read more information about the move-in.
