Group Tutoring Updates for Summer Sessions
With the continuation of online courses this summer, we the following Tutoring Groups will now operate on a "drop-in" basis via Zoom:

  • Biology Group (Courses: BIO 003, BIO 011, BIO 012)
  • Chemistry Group (Courses: BCHM 162, CHEM 003, CHEM 004, CHEM 135)

Students enrolled in these courses will have access to a Tutoring Course on their Blackboard homepage. Students should follow these steps to access these groups' tutoring hours:

  1. In the appropriate Blackboard Tutoring course, click on Zoom Room on the left menu
  2. You'll see a list of scheduled tutoring times - find the appropriate session (you can click on the meeting title for more info)
  3. A green dot will appear next to a session that is "live" - Click the Join button to enter
  4. If prompted, follow the on-screen instructions to download and install the Zoom
  5. Click "Open Zoom meeting" when prompted, and click Join with Computer Audio
NOTE: If you are planning to use a tablet or phone, you may want to download the Zoom app in advance. Visit Zoom.Hofstra.us and use your Hofstra username and password to download the app or log in to Zoom.

Our Recommendations for the Zoom Group Tutoring Experience:

  • Be prepared to work both as a group and independently in these sessions. There may be a longer wait time as our tutors do their best to answer everyone's questions.
  • The tutors reserve the right to group students into Breakout Rooms to manage attendance. Breakout Rooms are an excellent way to get to know other students in the course and work together on concepts while you wait for our tutors to guide you!
  • Use a pair of headphones with a built-in mic if possible - this helps to eliminate the sound around you
  • When you aren't asking a question to the tutors, use the Mute button in Zoom (the Microphone icon)
  • You can choose to turn on/off your webcam using the Video icon
  • You can use the Share Screen button to share a document or window you have open on your device. However, we recommend you share the individual window only and not your entire desktop/screen for privacy reasons.
    • You can open a PowerPoint, for example, and only select the PowerPoint when the Share Screen options appear
  • Open the Chat window if you're having difficulty with your microphone and want to ask a question
  • Remember that you are utilizing a Hofstra University service - appropriate student conduct and professional, respectful behavior is expected at all times!

One-on-One Tutoring Appointments Updates for Summer Sessions
Several of our one-on-one tutors are continuing with appointments via Zoom for the Summer Sessions. To check tutoring availability for a course that is not offered by our Tutoring Groups above, please log into My.Hofstra.Edu Portal and open the Student Success Connect app. Click on the "Make an Appointment" button and locate the Undergraduate Tutorial Program. The next steps will allow you to choose one of your courses and look for appointment availability in the scheduler.

During the Summer, one-on-one tutoring appointments are 45 minutes and students are allowed three (3) appointments per course each week. Appointments must be scheduled at least 24 hours in advance. Students are urged to schedule appointments before they experience serious academic difficulty, and have the ability to book up to 7 days in advance.
