Hofstra Ranked as One of Top Universities for Students with Disabilities

Book Monitoring Disability-Friendly Universities Recognizes Hofstra

Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY – The new book College Success for Students With Physical Disabilities, lists Hofstra as a leading university for students with disabilities. The book addresses the most relevant concerns and aspects of college life for students with physical disabilities residing on campus.

Hofstra University’s Division of Student Affairs is proud of the Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD) department office which supports all students with physical, learning and/or psychological disabilities. The department supports students to develop the skills they will need to be effective self-advocates at Hofstra and beyond. The programs and services support active involvement from students in managing their own disabilities, while offering support along the way.

Services for Students with Disabilities has made many program enhancements in the last year. SSD brought a charter chapter of Delta Alpha Pi to campus, the nation’s only academic honor society exclusively for students with disabilities. The website experienced a complete over-haul in 2011, now providing additional resources for students and tips and strategies for faculty working with students with disabilities. Fee based programs such as the Program for Academic Learning Skills (PALS) and the academic coaching program assist students in their academic work, providing one on one support to help them develop effective learning strategies. Department director Julie Yindra said “SSD is extremely proud to carry on the legacy of access and equity for students with disabilities that has been a part of Hofstra’s culture for decades.”

College Success for Students With Physical Disabilities, released on February 1, 2012, grew out of the author’s experiences with her own son a college student with cerebral palsy. Together, they researched the many schools in the U.S. to compile a list of the most disability-friendly colleges in the nation. Their findings then turned into a website, http://www.disabilityfriendlycolleges.com, becoming a resource for students with disabilities all over the country. The book includes the only listing of colleges in the United States that provide accommodations for students with physical disabilities that go beyond the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Hofstra University is a dynamic private institution where students can choose from about 140 undergraduate and more than 150 graduate programs in liberal arts and sciences, business; engineering; communication; education, health and human services; and honors studies, as well as a School of Law and the Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine.

Missions Statement of Services for Students with Disabilities: Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD) provides disability related education, services and resources to the Hofstra Community. SSD ensures equal access to education for all Hofstra students, regardless of disability, in compliance with federal law and in keeping with Hofstra’s longstanding commitment to equality and access in its programs and services. We respectfully serve our students by facilitating barrier-free educational opportunities and assisting them in becoming self-advocating, independent learners.
