First-Year Students Timeline

June-August

  • Academics
    • Attend Orientation and register for Fall schedule.
    • Buy a planner and other supplies to help you manage your time in the upcoming semester.
  • Social
    • Research Hofstra’s many clubs and organizations.

September

  • Academics
    • Check your Hofstra Portal for all important dates and deadlines and to make sure that you are registered for all your courses. 
    • Check class Blackboard site.
    • On your fist day of class, exchange contact information with a classmate in each class that will take notes for you in case you are absent.
    • Create master schedule for yourself by using all your syllabi including all test dates, assignment due dates, and projects.
    • Designate a study area where you can fully concentrate and not be disturbed.
    • Seek tutoring and/or attend professors’ office hours if you find you are having any difficulties in your courses.

  • Social
    • Join clubs and organizations that you researched over the summer. Get involved and make the most of your time here!
    • Sign up and attend trips through the Explore Next Door program. For more information, please contact (516) 463-6914.

October-November

  • Academics
    • Consider taking a Winter course.
    • Make an appointment with your Advisement Dean to speak about registering for Spring.
    • Meet with Major Advisor if already declared.
    • Pre Health and Pre Med students meet with your pre professional advisor.
    • Prepare for midterms and make sure to communicate with your professors to gage your progress.
    • Seek tutoring and/or attend professors’ office hours if you find you are having any difficulties in your courses.

December

  • Finish your class assignments and prepare for finals.
  • Enjoy your winter break!

January

  • Academics
    • Complete Winter course if registered for one.
    • Prepare for upcoming Spring semester.
    • Start Spring classes.

January 29 Monday Classes Begin
February 4 Sunday Last Day to register or add a class online
February 5 Monday Department permission required to add classes. Override form required to register.
February 19 Monday President's Break - NO Classes. University Closed
February 20 Tuesday President's Break - NO Classes.
Febraury 23 Friday Absolute last day to register or add a class
February 26 Monday Last day to drop a course without recieving a "W" grade on transcript.
March 7 Wednesday Last day to file the Pass/D/D+/Fail form.
March 18-24 Sundat to Saturday Spring Recess. Classes not in session.
April 13 Friday Last day to file the Repeat Course form
    Last day to withdraw from an individual course - for Undergraduate students.
May 9 Wednesday Last day to completely withdraw for all courses - for undergraduate students
May 10 & 11 Thursday & Friday Snow/Study/Reading day for Undergraduate classes only. Graduate classes meet.
May 11 Friday Last day to withdraw from a course - for Graduate students
May 14-19 Monday-Saturday Final exams for all classes
May 19 Saturday Semester Ends
May 20  Sunday Commencement
