What is Electrical Engineering?
Electrical engineers design, develop, test, and supervise the manufacturing of electrical equipment such as electric motors, radar and navigation systems, communications systems, or power generation equipment. Others design the electrical systems of automobiles and aircraft and broadcast and communications systems, from portable music players to global positioning systems (GPS). Many also work in areas closely related to computer hardware.
The work of electrical engineers and electronics engineers is often similar. Both use engineering and design software and equipment to perform engineering tasks. Electronics engineers who work for the federal government research, develop, and evaluate electronic devices used in diverse technologies, such as aviation, computing, transportation, and manufacturing. They work on satellites, flight systems, radar and sonar systems, and communications systems.
BS Electrical Engineering Degree (Computer Option)
The computer option in the Electrical Engineering program applies the principles of both electrical engineering and computer science to the design of computers and digital systems, focusing on the interface between hardware and system software.
Career Potential in Electrical Engineering
The median annual wage for electrical engineers was $96,640 in May 2018. The median wage is the wage at which half the workers in an occupation earned more than that amount and half earned less. The lowest 10% earned less than $61,190, and the highest 10% earned more than $153,240.
The median annual wage for electronics engineers (except computer) was $102,700 in May 2018. The lowest 10% earned less than $64,840, and the highest 10% earned more than $162,200.

Most electrical and electronics engineers work full time.
Civil engineers typically work full time and some work more than 40 hours per week. Engineers who direct projects may need to work extra hours in order to monitor progress on projects, to ensure that designs meet requirements, and to guarantee that deadlines are met.
