Lighting
The University is committed to providing outdoor and indoor light in an energy efficient manner. The following addresses this goal:
- In 1992, Hofstra University began upgrading the lighting on campus to a more energy efficient system utilizing fluorescent T8 lamps, electronic ballasts, compact fluorescent lamps and occupancy sensors. Over 2.5 million square feet of space was retrofit. That new lighting was more than 30% more efficient than the T12 lighting it replaced.
- All renovation and new building projects are reviewed to ensure that the most efficient lighting is used whenever and were ever possible.
What can you do?
- Utilize natural lighting by opening blinds instead of turning on additional lights.
- Occupy common space for studying instead of a private location.
- Utilize a compact fluorescent lamp instead of an incandescent lamp.
- Turn off lights, computers, televisions, etc., when you leave the room.
