Chemistry Department Facilities

The Department of Chemistry is located in Berliner Hall.  Our modern building is well-equipped and houses classrooms, laboratories, faculty offices, and a teaching computer laboratory. Small laboratory class sizes promote close student-faculty interaction and hands-on use of our sophisticated equipment.  Some of the instrumentation located in the Chemistry Department’s laboratories includes:

  • JEOL ECS 400 MHz FT-NMR spectrometer
  • Agilent LC-MSD
  • Agilent and Waters HPLCs
  • two Hewlett-Packard GC-MS
  • gas chromatographs equipped with flame-ionization and thermal-conductivity detectors
  • two FT-IR spectrophotometers
  • Varian fluorescence spectrophotometer
  • Varian atomic absorption spectrophotometer
  • UV-Vis spectrophotometers
  • Bio-Rad capillary electrophoresis
  • Perkin-Elmer differential scanning calorimeter (DSC)
  • Melles Griot Argon laser
  • Wyatt Laser Light Scattering Photometer
  • Waters Size Exclusion Chromatograph
  • Brookfield Rotational Viscometer
  • a thermal gravimetric analyzer

The building houses a small computer laboratory and there are several large computer facilities on campus available to all Hofstra students.  Students have access to all the American Chemical Society journals as well as other selected chemical literature on-line in addition to the large collection of chemical books and journals available in the University’s main library.
