Undergraduate Programs and Courses
Bachelor of Arts
The three concentrations offered in the department of English – English and American Literature, Creative Writing and Publishing Studies – may find that all three are great foundations for a wide variety of careers in education, publishing, journalism, public relations, law, advertising and marketing and many other industries. Students in these concentrations may find that they can easily finish major requirements within four years.
Students who choose the English and American Literature concentration take a wide variety of courses in literature, organized around issues, authors, genres, or historical periods.
Students who choose the Creative Writing and Literature concentration divide their course work between literature courses and workshops in writing prose, poetry, drama, essays, screenplays, and children's literature.
Students who choose the Publishing Studies concentration divide their course work between literature courses and courses in which they study the history and practice of publishing and the skills and techniques that are essential in the publishing industry.
Publishing Studies students are encouraged to take ENGL 170 (“Theory and Practice of Publishing”) and 171 (“The History of Publishing in America”) in their sophomore year; ENGL 172 (“Book Editing I”) and 173 (“Book Editing II”) during their sophomore or junior year, and ENGL 174 (“Book Promotion”) and 179A (“Book Design, Desktop Publishing and Production”) in their junior or senior year.
