Geographic Information Systems at Hofstra

The department of Geography offers to the Hofstra community a variety of services related to Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and computer mapping. They include:

• Introductory and intermediate GIS classes where students will learn the fundamentals and the practical aspects of this amazing mapping technology.

• The preparation of custom maps to suit specific educational, presentational or research needs. We have detailed datasets about the world and most of its regions, including economic, demographic and environmental indicators. We also have extensive datasets about the United States at various scales, from state-level to ZIP code and census bloc levels. Please have a look at the "Got Maps" initiative to see a list of available maps. If you need a base map that is not available on this site, we can promptly provide it in a wide variety of graphic formats.

• Advice about how to integrate GIS into your research. As long as you deal with an issue that can be placed on a map, GIS can help you see your problems from a new perspective.

• Geocoding (mapping) your datasets so that raw data is displayed on a map. For instance, addresses can become a series of points on a map or data collected at the ZIP code level can become graduated colors on a map.
