Hofstra Symphony Orchestra
The symphony orchestra is one of the department's major ensembles, comprising undergraduate and graduate level majors and non-majors. The orchestra includes the full complement of strings, woodwinds, brass and percussion needed to present a variety of repertoire dating from the Baroque era to the twenty-first century.
The orchestra performs two yearly campus concerts, accompanies the yearly winner of the concerto competition, engages professional soloists, and serves as the orchestra for all opera theater productions. The orchestra often collaborates with other Department of Music Ensembles, from the University Mixed Chorus to the Jazz Ensemble, to provide the most comprehensive survey of orchestral literature for its players and its audiences alike.
Auditions take place the first week of the fall semester; students should sign up for auditions in the music building. A prepared solo of standard repertoire is required (one piece or movement) and sight-reading and a scale are then requested. Percussion auditions need to be scheduled separately, dependent on the availability of the percussion studio instruments.
