Welcome
Welcome to Hofstra's Department of Philosophy. We offer courses in ancient, modern, and contemporary philosophy, leading to a major or minor in philosophy. Students may also minor in philosophy of law or philosophy of science, and focus on applied ethics. There is an active
Philosophy Club run by our undergraduates, and a
colloquium series featuring local, national, and international speakers.
Our faculty members are actively
engaged in research, and have a broad range of specializations, including many periods and figures in the history of philosophy, as well as ethics, metaphysics, and the philosophical studies of mind, language, knowledge, environment, mathematics, law, and science.

In April 2008,
WNYC radio discussed the recent growth in students majoring in philosophy, what draws them to the field, and what they plan to do with the major. The same week, the New York Times also ran a
story on the topic (registration required).
