Today, it is not enough to know how to write well. You also have to know how writing works. This knowledge is essential for professional and academic advancement in fields such as business, communications, education, engineering, law, and medicine. In fact, Hofstra’s career center reports that the overwhelming majority of their job postings now include a requirement for well-developed writing skills.  Most major professional exams such as the MCAT and LSAT require successful completion of a writing assignment.

In Writing Studies and Composition students research the effect of writing on our world, our culture, and selves.  This research informs the content of both introductory and upper-level courses in writing. The minor in Writing Studies offers courses in the areas of professional writing, composition and rhetoric, and new media literacy. Click here for a full list of minor program offerings.

Faculty in the department also teach Writing Studies and Composition 1 and 2, requirements for university graduation.  In these courses students learn to use writing as a tool for critical thinking and intellectual engagement across the disciplines.
