Faculty Honors Options

Honors Options

Honors Options are designed to allow HUHC students to pursue an enriched curriculum in regular Hofstra courses, earning honors credits toward their HUHC designation along the way. With an honors option, you take the same course as everyone else, but you work directly with the professor on a set of enrichments that go a bit beyond the regular syllabus (which you are also responsible for, like everyone else). These enrichments vary by course, discipline, professor and even semester, but ideally reflect your interests in the field. Most importantly, while completing your honors option you will meet with your professor outside of class (typically every two weeks or so) to discuss the enrichments you are pursuing. As a result, by semester's end, you've had some six or seven private or small group conversations with your teacher about the passions you both share for the subject under discussion..

Why Honors Options?

Honors options allow you to focus your honors work where passions are. Honors options locate your honors work in those courses you are most looking forward to pursuing. As a result, any regular Hofstra course that fulfills a degree requirement for your major, your minor or in an elective slot can become an opportunity for honors work.
Honors Options are unique opportunities to turn your teachers into mentors. Honors options build long-lasting relationships with faculty, especially (but not exclusively) within the your major area of study. With an honors option you might be gaining a mentor who will be guiding you throughout your college career and beyond.

Which courses are eligible to be made into honors options?

Almost all courses at Hofstra are eligible for enrichment: except for skills classes such as language courses I-IV and WSC 001 & WSC 002.
