Seminars - Hofstra Students

Online Seminars

The following four (4) seminars are available to be completed online.

  • SOE 001A Identification of Child Abuse and Maltreatment
  • SOE 002A Fire and Arson Prevention
  • SOE 003A School Violence Prevention and Intervention (SAVE)
  • SOE 004A Prevention of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Drug Abuse (Substance Abuse)

You can register for these seminars like you would any other course by logging into the my.hofstra.edu portal, click on the 'Hofstra Online' left menu, then clicking 'Registration.

PLEASE NOTE:  you will be asked to enter a "start date", the "start date" should be the date that you are registering and you do not need to enter an end date. After you have registered, you will need to wait 24 hours and the seminar will appear on your Blackboard account. The seminars will be available for completion in Blackboard.  You must complete seminars by the specified deadline for you to get credit for that semester.  If you fail the online seminars, contact the Office of Educational Support Services   (516) 463-5747.  Seminars grades are Pass/Fail and are recorded on your student transcript at the end of each semester.

Who can use Hofstra Blackboard?
All students and all faculty members at Hofstra can use Hofstra Blackboard. This group includes all registered matriculated, and continuing graduate and undergraduate students in the School of Communication, School of Education, Zarb School of Business and Hofstra College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Law School students, New College, School for University Studies students and NOAH students are able to access Hofstra Blackboard .

When is the system available?
Hofstra Blackboard is available seven days a week, 24 hours each day. There is a maintenance window between 3 and 5 a.m. Saturday morning.

 

Who do I contact for assistance?
We are anxious to assist you with any questions that you may have regarding Hofstra Blackboard.

  • If you are having a problem with your PIN, access the Hofstra Online Information System and follow the instructions there.

How does it work? What do I need to access the system?
Hofstra Blackboard requires Netscape Navigator 4.5 or higher or Internet Explorer 5.0 or higher. AOL users should visit http://www.hofstra.edu/AOL  for further instructions.  From Hofstra's homepage http://www.hofstra.edu.   Integration with The Hofstra Online Information System will automatically generate a Web site for each course and an account for each instructor and student. Students will not see links to courses until the instructor marks the course as "available."

How often is information transferred from the Hofstra Online Information System to Hofstra Blackboard?
Information (including reset PINs, new account information, course information, course registrations, and instructor assignments) is transferred from the Hofstra Online Information System to Hofstra Blackboard every night. Information that is submitted to the Hofstra Online Information System before midnight will be available on Hofstra Blackboard the next morning.

In-Person Seminar Presentation

The Highway and School Safety/Prevention of Child Abduction
Each semester the Highway and School Safety/Preventions of Child Abduction seminar is available. You can go to hofstra.edu/seminarvisit to see the available dates and to register. Be sure to print the directions to the location of the seminar. You must sign in and out of the seminar to receive credit for the seminar you are attending. You must arrive at least 15 minutes early, the doors close promptly.
