Frequently Asked Questions about the educational law seminars:
- How do I register for the educational law seminars?
- Go to hofstra.edu.
Click on My Hofstra.
Login using your username and password.
Click on Student Services.
Look up classes to add.
Select the term you are registering for and hit Submit.
Under Subject, go to School of Education (SOE).
Leave everything else blank.
Click on Class Search.
All the seminars should appear on the next screen.
Click on the seminars you would like to register for.
When prompted for a start and end date:- Current Semester: If you are registering for a seminar during a semester that has already started, add today's date (the date you are registering) and leave the end date blank.
- Future Semester: If you are registering for a seminar in a future semester, add the first date of that term.
- How do I access the online seminars?
- If you have registered for the seminars and you would like to begin working on them:
Go to hofstra.edu.
Click on My Hofstra.
Login using your username and password.
In the upper right-hand corner click on My Apps (it looks like a small phone keypad).
Click on the Canvas app.
You may be prompted to click OK.
Each seminar that you are registered for will be listed under My Courses.
*Please note, you will not see the seminars until they are available. - What fees are associated with taking the educational law seminars?
- All educational law seminars are free for Hofstra students.
- What grade will I receive for the educational law seminar on my transcript?
- The online seminars are graded "P" for Pass or "NC" for No Credit.
You will receive an "NC" if you do not complete the seminar by the deadline.
Deadlines are found in the "Announcements" section in Canvas, on our flyers located at the Office of Educational Support Services, Room 233 Hagedorn Hall, and at the top of this website: hofstra.edu/academics/colleges/soeahs/cess/cess_seminars_hofstra.html.
You will also be sent several reminders to complete the seminar by its deadline. Reminders are sent to your Hofstra email account. It is important that you check your email regularly.
The Harassment/Bullying DASA seminar is graded "P" for Pass or "NA" for Not Attended. - I just registered for an online seminar; however I do not see it in Canvas.
- If you register for an online seminar prior to the beginning of the semester, you will not see the seminar in your Canvas account until the seminar becomes available. Please see the educational law seminar flyers for the dates when the online seminars become available. If you register for an online seminar after the semester begins, it will take 24 hours for the registration to be processed in Canvas.
- What is the format of the online seminars?
- Each of the online seminars has four modules - each module contains a video followed by three to four questions based on the video.
You must get all the questions correct in order to move onto the next module. You are given three attempts to get the questions correct.
If you do not get all the questions correct, you will not have access to the next module.
If you do not complete all four modules, you will not receive credit for completing the seminar. - I just completed an online seminar, why don't I see this reflected on my transcript?
- The seminar grades are not automatic. They are manually entered once every three weeks.
- How long will the educational law seminars take me to complete?
- Each of the online seminars could take up to two hours to complete.
The Harassment/Bullying DASA seminar is an in-person seminar only. The state mandates six hours of training for DASA. Currently, we offer a one-day DASA training for six hours. Beginning January 2017, we will offer DASA training in two sessions - three hours each session. For the two-day sessions, you must attend BOTH dates in order to receive credit for attending. NO EXCEPTIONS will be made. If you only attend one of the dates, you will receive a "NA"(Not Attended) on your transcript and you will need to reregister for another DASA seminar. - Which of the educational law seminars are posted to my TEACH account?
- The only seminars that the state allows registered providers to upload are the following: Identification of Child Abuse and Maltreatment, School Violence Prevention and Intervention (SAVE), and DASA.
The others – Fire and Arson Prevention, Prevention of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Drug Abuse (Substance Abuse), and Highway and School Safety/Prevention of Child Abduction – are part of program completion and required for Hofstra to make an institutional recommendation for certification.
The Office of Teaching Initiatives (TEACH) requires that the University verify that these seminars have been completed; however, they do NOT get uploaded to TEACH.

From there, follow the directions on how to set up an account. - I took Identification of Child Abuse and Maltreatment, School Violence Prevention and Intervention (SAVE), or DASA prior to the spring 2015 semester, why is not listed on my TEACH account?
- The Office of Teaching Initiatives (TEACH) first allowed registered providers to electronically upload the completion of Identification of Child Abuse and Maltreatment, School Violence Prevention and Intervention (SAVE), and DASA during the spring 2015 semester.
If you took Child Abuse Prevention/Intervention, School Violence Prevention/Intervention (SAVE), or DASA at Hofstra University prior to the spring 2015 semester, they were NOT electronically uploaded as it was not an option at that time.
It is understood through the University's institutional recommendation for certification that Hofstra has verified that all seminars have been completed. TEACH will not require any further documentation, or seminars to be listed separately under "workshops" for any student who completes a registered teacher preparation program and has the institutional recommendation for certification. - Where do I find the completion of the educational law seminars on my TEACH account?
- The completion of Identification of Child Abuse and Maltreatment, School Violence Prevention and Intervention (SAVE), and DASA can be found in your TEACH account under "Workshops."

Go to Inquiry Links, then Account Information, then Workshops. - I finished the Identification of Child Abuse and Maltreatment and School Violence Prevention and Intervention (SAVE) seminar. The grade has been posted to my transcript; however, I do not see it noted on my TEACH account.
- The completion of the online seminars Identification of Child Abuse and Maltreatment and School Violence Prevention and Intervention (SAVE) are electronically uploaded to your TEACH account once every three weeks.
If you do not see them posted on your TEACH account after three weeks, please call 516-463-5747. - I've used up all my attempts in an online seminar, what do I do now?
- If you have used up all your attempts and did not get a 100% in the module, you will be blocked from moving on to the next module. You must call the Office of Educational Support Services at 516-463-5747.
- I'm having difficulties viewing the videos.
- Explorer doesn't always allow you to view videos. You can try changing browsers.
If you change browsers and it still does not work, please try a different computer.
If you change browsers and computers and you are still unable to view a video, or if you are having any other difficulties with Blackboard, please call the Helpdesk at 516-463-7777. - What do I need to bring with me to the DASA seminar?
- Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and restrictions on social distancing, all in-person DASA seminars will be held via Zoom on the scheduled date and time. The link to the DASA Zoom workshop will be emailed to your Hofstra email account one day prior to the seminar.
Once these restrictions are lifted, DASA will resume its original in-person format.
For the one-day, six-hour sessions, you will need to bring a lunch. The state mandates six hours of training so there will not be enough time to leave and purchase something to eat. - How long will it take after the completion of the DASA seminar for it to show up on my TEACH account? (For students who took DASA during spring 2015 and after)
- The completion of DASA will appear on your TEACH account approximately one week after the seminar date. If you do not see it after one week, please call 516-463-5747.
- I do not see DASA on my TEACH account, I took it prior to the spring of 2015.
- If you took the DASA seminar at Hofstra University prior to the spring of 2015, you were given a certificate of completion at the end of the seminar with instructions on how to mail it to the state. The certificate should be mailed to:
