B.S. in Health Education

This undergraduate major program is designed to provide students with the knowledge, methods, materials, field experiences, and student teaching necessary for a career as a health education teacher all grades. Training includes the development of a broad knowledge base in the areas of health promotion, disease prevention, and program planning and implementation, with an emphasis on educational methods and techniques appropriate for a school setting. The program combines on-campus course work with a broad array of field experiences in a variety of school settings, culminating in student teaching. Literacy, multicultural education, information technology, and inclusion are integrated throughout all areas of the curriculum. Successful completion of the program and a passing score on the New York State Teacher Certification Examinations (NYSTCE) will qualify the student to obtain initial New York State Teacher Certification.

M.S. in Health Education

This program is a certification program in health education that includes two tracks: (1) for candidates who have a teaching certificate in another discipline, or (2) for candidates who are seeking an initial teaching certificate. In both tracks, students will obtain initial certification in health education after completing the course work in the track in which they are enrolled. This graduate program prepares students to teach health education at all grade levels in public and private schools and leads to New York state teacher certification. The curriculum integrates technology and issues of diversity in all course work. This program meets both the New York State Learning Standards for Health Education as well as the standards of the American Association for Health Education (AAHE).

• Track I is for candidates who have a teaching certificate in another discipline. Students will obtain initial certification in health education after completing the course work in the track in which they are enrolled. This graduate program prepares students to teach health education at all grade levels in public and private schools and leads to New York state teacher certification.  Track I Requirements are as follows:
  • Completion of General Education Core
  • Completion of Health Prerequisites
  • Completion of Competencies (.5 s.h.)
  • Completion of Master of Science in Health Education (39 s.h.)
  • Completion of 50 hours field experience in Health

• Track II is for candidates who do not have a teaching certificate. Students will obtain initial certification in health education after completing the course work in the track in which they are enrolled. This graduate program prepares students to teach health education at all grade levels in public and private schools and leads to New York state teacher certification. Track II Requirements are as follows:
  • Completion of General Education Core
  • Completion of Health Prerequisites
  • Completion of Professional Education Core (12-18 s.h.)
  • Completions of Competencies (.5 s.h.)
  • Completion of Master of Science in Health Education (39 s.h.)
  • Completion of 100 hours of Field Experiences
  • Student Teaching (6 s.h.)
