Science and Technology Entry Program (STEP)

Eligibility: (grades 7 through 12)

New York state residents from one of the following groups: African-American, Hispanic/Latino, Native American Indian or Alaskan Native or

New York state residents from other groups who meet the economically disadvantaged criteria as outlined by New York State Education Department or

The selection of students will also take into account factors such as motivation, academic grades, interest in mathematics and science, career interest in one of the New York state licensed professions, and potential for success in the program.

STEP focuses on students in Hempstead, Freeport, Roosevelt or Uniondale Middle and High Schools. Students from other school districts and private schools are considered on an individual basis.

How to Apply

A parent or guardian must complete an application for student enrollment and participation. The following information and/or forms must be submitted with the application:

  • Student birth certificate
  • Student social security number
  • Latest test scores
  • Parent release forms
  • Field trip permission forms
  • Teacher recommendations
