MARKETING INTERNSHIP (MKT 185) GUIDELINES

OBJECTIVE

Marketing internship programs are a means by which students can learn marketing principles and applications through actual work/experience in the field.

REQUIREMENTS
  • senior standing
  • minimum GPA of 3.0 overall and minimum GPA 3.0 in marketing courses
  • prerequisite: MKT 124
  • Co-requisite: related marketing course in the are of the internship (e.g., Principle of Advertising for an Advertising internship)
TYPES OF INTERNSHIPS APPROVED

Internships should impart a learning experience to the student. It is imperative that the internship be viewed as a learning experience rather than a “job”.

As such, the following must be demonstrated before an internship is approved:

  • must be business related
  • involves a well-structured training program that has been developed by the firm. A form fully detailing the program must be completed by a representative of the firm.
  • Emphasis must be on a specific project(s)/assignment(s).
  • Involves applying some of the business concepts learned in the classroom (e.g.,—developing or critiquing an advertising plan/ developing a merchandising strategy for a retail outlet; developing a service concept to attract donors for a not-for-profit organization, etc.)
  • Has a person assigned as a supervisor (a manager or higher level) who trains, assists and is available for the student and also works as the liaison between the firm and the faculty advisor.

The internship should not entail clerical/secretarial work, running errands, answering phones, order taking, working as a cashier, stock checking, receptionist, etc. which are in some form and manner deemed not related to an appropriate level business position. Likewise, work experience is not satisfactory as an internship unless the above listed requirements are met.

HOURS

Each intern should work a minimum of 120 hours, preferably spread out over the entire term in which credit is earned.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE

Each internship would begin with a written proposal to the departmental internship coordinator before the start of the term in which an intern is to enroll in an internship.

The Internship Sponsorship Form should be completed by a representative of the sponsoring firm and returned to the departmental internship coordinator.

TRACKING

It is required that the intern:

  • Meet with the faculty advisor during the first week of the term
  • Meet with the faculty advisor every third week during the term
  • Present oral progress reports along with a brief written outline of accomplishments midway during the project.
  • Present the final written reports to the faculty advisor not later than the last day of exams week or as required by the specific advisor
EVALUATION (FINAL EVALUATION IS DETERMINED BY INTERNSHIP ADVISOR)

Each student is to be evaluated through:

  • A 10-page written report on the internship, focusing in the background and the business of the company, the internship training program (a description and critique), the specific projects performed, what was learned from the experience, and how the program could be improved
  • A 15-page term paper that consists of a literature review related to the area of the business studied in the internship (e.g., for and advertising internship, the trends in cable television advertising)
  • A daily journal detailing activities in the internship. This log should help the department internship coordinator in screening out companies that are not meeting the criteria set forth above for future internships.
  • Formal feedback from the supervisor of the intern to determine the extent of the student’s understanding of his/her tasks and capacity to follow through on assignments
GRADING

On the basis of the evaluation criteria the student will be given a letter grade by his/her faculty advisor from A to F.

MAJOR CREDIT

Satisfaction of the above criteria of MKT 185 will yield 3 credits of marketing electives.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

I am not a senior, may I still receive credit for an internship?
Departmental requirements state that only seniors may enroll in MKT 185. This means you may register for MKT 185 only after you have completed 88 semester hours (as well as MKT 124 and 3 additional semester hours of marketing above MKT 124).

I want to do an internship, but I do not need (want) the credit. What are my options?
By definition, only positions where the student is earning academic credit are considered internships. As such, only those positions where students are receiving credit are handled by the Department of Marketing and International Business. Non-credit internships are “jobs”. The Office of Student Employment may be of some assistance in helping you locate a position of this nature.

I currently hold a job outside of school. Can I sue that for internship credit?
Possibly. You would need to have your job supervisor complete an Internship Sponsorship Form (found in appendix). If the Department Internship Coordinator perceives that the job contains an educational component, it may be sued to fulfill the requirements of MKT 185.

I had a summer job last year. Can I count that as an internship now?
No, unless you are still at that job. One of the key aspects of MKT 185 is regular meetings with your internship faculty advisor to discuss your internship experience and to integrate with your overall marketing education. If you have already completed your, employment such meetings would not be possible.

I am minoring in marketing. Can I register for MKT 185?
Assuming you meet all the other prerequisites, you may register for MKT 185. However, the course will not count toward the 18 semester hours you need to complete the marketing minor. The course would be taken above and beyond the six courses needed for the minor.
