30th Annual
Summer Writers' Conference
July 8- 19, 2002
These workshops are designed to help
developing writers sharpen their powers of expression. They include reading
and discussion of students' work and analysis of themes and techniques.
Prerequisite for credit students: ENGL 133 and permission of Dr.
Janssen, Director of the Writer's Conference.
The workshops are offered by the English
Department in cooperation with the University College for Continuing Education.
The Hofstra University Summer Writers'
Conference provides aspiring writers the chance to work with established
authors who have extended the borders of the conventional genres of fiction,
poetry, playwriting, nonfiction, and children's writing. Within each of
the workshops the student has the opportunity for more than 25 hours of
contact with a practicing professional writer. Guided by a master teacher
and a published author, students hone their craft during an intensive
week of writing. They also have the opportunity to meet and socialize
with published authors, agents, and publishers.
The Summer High School Student
Writers' Conference also offers workshops in poetry and prose for
high school students with a serious interest in writing.
Daily workshops, individual conferences
with writers, and a rich assortment of readings and presentations punctuate
the conference. Students attend a workshop each day as well as luncheon
presentations featuring guest writers, workshop leaders, panel discussions,
publishers, editors and agents. Afternoons provide students with recreational
activities designed to stimulate writing. The weekend is free for writing
and rewriting. A banquet during the second week week of the conferences
is the occaision for an address by a noteworthy special guest.
Participants will also have a chance
to attend collateral events, which are designed to provide students with
recreation and stimulation to improve their writing. Students have the
opportunity to view and critique movies made from books, listen to guest
lecturers on the craft of writing, participate in recreation programs,
or simply find some quiet time to write.
Instructors and speakers in the past
have included such well-known figures as Denise Levertov (american Academy
of American Poets Fellowship 1995), Robert Olsen Butler (Pulitzer Prize
1993), Carol Maso ( Lannan Literary award, 1993), Oscar Hijuelos (Pulitzer
Prize 1990), Maurice Sendak, John Yau, Wendy Walker, Marjorie Welish,
Toby Olson Ali, Armand Schwerner, Helena Clare Pittman, Tor Seidler, and
Bei Dao.
