Richard Pioreck teaches creative writing and literature, and is Director of Hofstra Summer Writers Program while pursuing a career in the theater as a playwright, actor and director. A Dramatist Guild member, his produced plays include: Say It Ain't So, Joe, Nicolette and Aucassin (book and lyrics) This Is It! Winesburg (book and lyrics), based on Sherwood Anderson's Winesburg, Ohio, 'Grocery Encounters,' and 'Natural Beauty Preserved.' He is also a member of the Abingdon Theatre and Queens Theatre in the Park Playwright Groups, where his plays Bless All the Dear Children in Thy Tender Care and Bella Vista America! are being developed. With Abe Alvarez and Paul Navarra, he began developing a sitcom, All Washed Up, for an independent production company. He is also working on a novel about marriage and politics in New York City.
Besides creative writing, his academic interests are American Theater from WWI to the present and American vaudeville. His work on vaudeville and baseball led to a course on Baseball and American Literature, and the to The Simpsons and American Literature.
His recent regional acting credits include Big Daddy (Cat on a Hot Tin Roof), Ziggy (Side Man), Alec Bulthorpe (Key For Two), Blue (Voices in the Dark) Detective Sergeant Porterhouse (Run For Your Wife), Egeus (A Midsummer Night's Dream), and Will Masters (Bus Stop). Other favorite roles: the Ghost (Hamlet), Antonio (The Tempest), Krogstad (A Doll's House), He (Hunting Cockroaches), Mitch (A Streetcar Named Desire), Sky Masterson (Guys and Dolls), Medvedenko (The Seagull), Gooper (Cat on a Hot Tin Roof/i>), Leo (The Little Foxes), Andy (Love Letters), Jeff (Brigadoon), Sir Thomas More (The Red Hat), Doc Gibbs (Our Town), Hennessey (Dames At Sea), and Dr. Morse (Second Time Around). He also appeared in the Tribeca Film Festival Short Film Finalist, Street Therapy as the Grocery Guy.
