75th Anniversary Oral History Project

The 75th Anniversary Oral History Project Collection is available as part of Hofstra’s University Archives and consists of almost 100 interviews done by Hofstra students and professors. An incredible effort went into making this project a success.

Each digital recording has been transferred to disks so that the interviews are available in the Special Collections Reading Room. An appointment is required and can be scheduled by calling: 516-463-6411.

We are currently concentrating our efforts on transcribing the interviews. This is an extremely labor intensive process and although we are working through the tapes as fast as we can, it may be several years before all of them are finished.

Please visit this site often as we intend to place two to three minute clips of interviews on our webpage. Currently, a graduate student is working on a voice and slide show created from archival photographs and audio from each of Hofstra’s Presidents.

About the 75th Anniversary Project:

This project was started as part of the activities of Hofstra’s 75th Anniversary Celebration. Through the efforts of the Anniversary Committee, the History Department, and the Special Collections Department, it was thought that students would gain insight into Hofstra’s history by interviewing key members of our community. In the fall of 2009, an oral history class led by Professor James A. Levy was given to undergraduate students to teach interview and research skills for oral historians. Eleven students were then selected to become paid interviewers. Selection of the interview subjects was difficult, but it was hoped that the historical record would be populated with reminiscences from every sector of our community. The project was intended for both current and future reference and scholarship.

In addition to the 75th Anniversary oral histories, a separate project that was part of the 50th Anniversary celebration includes interviews with past presidents of Hofstra, administrators, faculty members, and students. There are approximately 20 interviews available from that project as well.
