New Student Programs
The Office of Student Leadership and Activities seeks to ease the transition of new undergraduate students into the academic, social and extracurricular communities of the University. Our New Student Programs achieve this goal by:
- Collaborating with students, faculty and staff to ensure that new undergraduate students are aware of all student services available on-campus.
- Providing extensive information regarding academic requirements and expectations.
- Encouraging new students to explore opportunities to interact with other students, faculty and staff.
- Implementing activities to aid in the transition to University life.
- Developing student leaders through the Orientation Leader Program.
- Introducing campus culture and traditions.
The journey begins with Summer Orientation. The Summer Orientation program is designed with student success and enjoyment in mind and is a student's first official induction into the Hofstra family. Students stay on campus in a residential living center for the three-day program. The program introduces new students to all areas of Hofstra, including student services, faculty, academic advisers and the "campus culture."
Late in August, we offer the Discovery Program. This dynamic interactive program is designed for incoming first-year students who want to be actively engaged through service-learning, adventure and discovery. Participants choose a path of discovery -- compassion or conservation -- and are led by upper-class students. This is an opportunity to build connections and discover campus resources to help with the transition to college. Take advantage of this opportunity and become empowered to make decisions about the future and our world! Register today for this new and exciting program!
During Welcome Week, new students are asked to join the students, faculty and staff of Hofstra University as we welcome them to campus to kick-off the academic year. Welcome Week is designed to help them meet new people and immerse themselves in campus life.
The week will kick-off on Thursday, August 26, 2010, with their official welcome to the University from Hofstra President Stuart Rabinowitz.
Throughout the week, there will be academic programs, trips, guest speakers, and social and educational activities planned. This is a great way to meet other students, develop friendships and get involved!
During the fall and spring semester, our office presents the Explore Next Door (END)program. These trips seek to introduce students to the cultural wealth of New York City, and provide them with an opportunity to connect with their fellow students, faculty and administrators outside of the classroom.
The FOCUS (Focusing on College and Understanding Social Issue) program is a companion piece to END. This series of workshops and seminars are geared towards areas outside the academic arena that first-year students may encounter during their transition to college.
We hope that all new undergraduates take advantage of all of these programs, events and activities as they begin their journey at Hofstra.
