Training and Development

Employee Training and Development Certificate Programs are available to staff and administrators. These programs offer participants the opportunity to attend seminars designed to develop and enhance professional skills. Seminars are conducted on campus, during the workday.

A certificate is awarded to those who complete a series of ten seminars. Administrators are required to take two mandatory EEO compliance seminars; staff employees are required to attend one mandatory EEO compliance seminar. The balance of the seminars can be selected based on area of interest and professional development needs. Examples of topics are:

  • The Art of Influence: Getting to Yes
  • Valuing Differences: Understanding Diversity Issues

Training and Development Lunchtime and Evening Workshops

Spring 2012

  • Blood Drive
    DONATIONS ARE URGENTLY NEEDED. Close to 2,000 men, women and children in our community, including cancer, transplant and surgery patients, trauma victims, newborn babies, and many others need blood transfusions each day. Since blood lasts only 42 days, area hospitals are in real need. You can change that. One pint of blood is separated into components that can save several lives. Please consider making a donation and giving the gift of life. Walks-ins welcome. Appointments can be made by contacting Susan Czuwak 
    Date: Spring Blood Drive-March 13, 2012 from 8:30AM-8:30PM in the Multipurpose Room.
  • Defensive Driving
    This is a New York state, DMV-approved point and insurance reduction program.  Upon completion of the program, you may be entitled to a 10 percent reduction on vehicle liability, personal injury protection and collision insurance for three years.  In addition, you may also be eligible for a reduction of up to four points on your driving record.  The course is offered in two three-hour sessions by the Bayshore Safety Council.  By New York state law, you must attend both sessions, for the full six hours, to receive driver safety certification.  The workshop is open to all members of the Hofstra University Community and family members.  There is a $22 fee.

    EEO Compliance Training
  • Harassment Policy Training for Staff Employees
    This EEO compliance course focuses on defining harassment under Hofstra University’s Harassment Policy, along with the implications of organizational liability.  We will distinguish the differences between “quid pro quo” and “hostile environment” harassment, and will discuss ways to prevent those situations proactively.  In addition, we will discuss appropriate procedures under the Hofstra University Harassment policy.
    Dates: February 17th, April 3rd, June 5th, August 8th

  • Harassment Policy Training for Administrative Employees

  • Dealing With Difficult People Why do interactions with some people seem taxing and less effective than with others?  The challenge is in determining why the communication does not go smoothly and how to avoid discord in the future.  Dealing with Difficult People provides insight into different personality types, characteristics of these personalities and the necessary skills that will lead to more successful, harmonious relationships and a synergistic culture.

  • Positive Discipline
    Are you dreading an upcoming performance discussion with one of your staff? Can you use tools to help focus the conversation on performance issues and not personality traits? Positive Discipline utilizes a coaching-oriented approach rather than a punishment approach. The workshop features realistic vignettes as illustrations and interactive exercises to hardwire the concepts. The workshop objectives are to show how a punishment approach to disciplinary problems is counterproductive and explore and practice the steps in using positive discipline
    At the end of the training participants will be able to confidently use the proven strategy of positive discipline to intervene, solve and prevent disciplinary problems in your own department encourage employees to take personal responsibility for their behavior.  For administrators.

Health & Fitness Programs

  • Weight Watchers at Work
    With two different approaches to healthy weight loss, you can chose the plan that fits your needs and preferences. Learn how to make wise food choices and maintain your weight loss.

  • Yoga
    A certified yoga instructor reviews fundamentals while demonstrating proper breathing and stretching techniques. Bring a mat or bath towel, and wear comfortable clothing. Please do not eat two hours before class and avoid wearing any cologne or perfume.

  • Shape, Firm & Tone
    These 45-minute exercise sessions will provide a total body workout during your lunch break.  Bring your own set of dumbbells and get ready to exercise!
