English Professors Martha McPhee and Bill McGee talk to WRHU's Paula Curci about what's new in Hofstra's English Department (2011).

English

Welcome to Hofstra's English Department. Among the largest programs in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the English Department offers concentrations in English and American literature, creative writing, and publishing. Its diverse and accomplished faculty consists of nationally recognized scholars in a wide range of fields, from opera and gay and lesbian studies to disability studies, English and American literature, and literary theory. Our faculty is committed to serving students and developing their talents—in classroom discussions about literary texts; in one-to-one conferences, where students can hone their writing; and in graduate instruction, where developing professionals can enhance their skills. Students who pursue creative writing have the chance to work with award-winning authors in small classes designed to shape and nurture their talent. Our graduates have gone on to a wide range of careers, including teaching, the law, publishing, advertising, and television and film. Students can pursue their career goals in affiliated activities the department sponsors, including a student literary magazine, publishing internships, the national English honor society Sigma Tau Delta, and study abroad.
