Welcome to the Department of Global Studies and Geography's web site. The Department is housed in Roosevelt Hall, at the heart of Hofstra's East Campus.
Our Department offers a very wide variety of global studies and geography courses which lead to a BA in Global Studies or Geography (or a joint major). Our courses are aimed at enhancing our student's ability to understand and interpret the constantly changing world around them. Our diverse faculty are engaged in relevant and important research, which enables us to enliven our classes with discussions about the many real world issues confronting us (such as immigration, urbanization, global warming, environmental challenges, global economic changes, cultural shifts, population growth, gender roles in different societies, ethnic political conflict and boundary disputes). Many of our courses explore these issues on a regional basis.
Our Department welcomes talented students interested in completing a minor or major in our two complementary programs. You will find that our programs offer a wealth of future rewarding career opportunities. Students who have completed courses in Geographical Information Systems (GIS) are particularly sought after in occupations as diverse as marketing, computer mapping companies (such as Google and ESRI), local government, education, law enforcement and the military. We also work with our students to help them find rewarding internships that provide course credits toward their degree. Our graduates have found employment in a wide variety of occupations, and many students have gone on to graduate school or entered programs such as the Peace Corps and Teach for America.
Should you decide to take classes in our Department, you will find that our faculty are willing to help you tailor a program that meets your interests and needs and will work with you to help shape a rewarding post-Hofstra career. After completing your visit to this web site, please feel free to contact any members of the Department for further information about our programs.
