The Hofstra University Wind Ensemble is a select, traditional wind ensemble of 35-40 players made up of primarily music majors representing the finest woodwind, brass, and percussion performers at the University.
The Ensemble consists of one or two performers on a part, playing music from various periods designed to be performed by a wind ensemble. The Ensemble offers performances on campus, as well as off-campus.
In addition to performing more challenging repertoire, the Ensemble features guest composers, soloists, and conductors. In recent years, the Wind Ensemble has performed for President George Bush and First Lady Barbara Bush as well as for the Queen's Day Celebration at the Netherlands Club of New York City by invitation of the Dutch Consul General, performed with renowned tuba soloist Harvey Phillips, and performed for Lady Margaret Thatcher, former Prime Minister of England.
The Hofstra University Symphonic Band is a 90 member concert band consisting of music majors and minors, as well as interested University students. The Symphonic Band performs music from various periods with several players per part.
This ensemble, with perfect instrumentation, continues a tradition of commissioning new works for band, and featuring guest composers, conductors, and soloists. Each year, since the inception of the Hofstra University Band Commissioning Project in 1991, the Hofstra University Band has commissioned and performed world premiere performances by renowned composers, such as: Vaclav Nelhybel, David Gillingham, Andrew Boysen, David Holsinger, Johan deMeij, Herbert Deutsch, Philip Sparke, Reber Clark, Robert W. Smith and Greg Sanders, and has recorded for Southern Music Publishing Company, C. Alan Music, and Daehn Publications. The Ensemble offers performances on campus, as well as off-campus. In addition, the ensemble performs each year as part of the Hofstra University Educational Band Clinic.
The Hofstra University Educational Band Clinic is designed to offer junior and senior high school bands an opportunity to immerse themselves in a day devoted to band performance. Each band has a private clinic with each of four renowned composers and/or conductors on one of their compositions. Through these rehearsals, students will work with and be directed by some of the nation's leading educational band composers and conductors. In addition, each band will attend a concert by the Hofstra University Symphonic Band in a performance of works conducted by the composers themselves. Recent guest artists have included: W. Francis McBeth, Andrew Boysen, Dr. Tim Lautzenheiser, Ed Lisk, David Holsinger, Steven Reineke, James Swearingen, Carl Strommen, Jerry Nowak, Elliot Del Borgo, Reber Clark, Steve Melillo, Loras Schissel, and Commander Lewis J. Buckley, Director of the United States Coast Guard Band.
