Dean's Welcome

Welcome to Hofstra’s School of Communication.

Passion. Inquiry. Creativity. They are part of everything we do – and everything you learn.

The reasons to begin your journey in the field of communication at Hofstra outnumber the channels on your cable system but consider:

  • Faculty with outstanding scholarly and professional backgrounds
  • Exposure to an academic program that strengthens skills and the desire to succeed
  • Hofstra’s proximity to the number one media market in the world: New York
  • Support and encouragement in an environment that thoroughly prepares you for the challenges ahead.

Just as the field changes and grows to meet the demands of an ever-increasing audience, so does the School of Communication. Coursework, equipment, and opportunities for real-life experience are top priorities that are consistently matched to the needs of the future.

Some of Hofstra’s outstanding alumni in communication fields include film director Francis Ford Coppola; actors Madeline Kahn, Lainie Kazan and Susan Sullivan; Phil Rosenthal, executive producer of Everybody Loves Raymond; special effects master, Scott Ross; the Today show’s senior producer, Amy Rosenblum; and sportscaster, John Discepolo.

The School of Communication now offers three masters programs – in Speech Communication, Journalism, and Documentary Studies and Production (the latter the only one of its kind on the East Coast).

We’re in the process of building a converged media environment where students from all disciplines can use audio, video, film and web platforms to create and disseminate their work beyond the classroom.

Come watch us in action in Dempster Hall. Meet with our students. Talk to our faculty, staff and alumni. See for yourself how OUR passion can stimulate YOUR passion as we help you find your place in the world.

I look forward to seeing you!
