The mission of the Department of Biology is to provide a comprehensive, high-quality education that fosters independence in the application of the scientific knowledge and the scientific method.  Studying biology at Hofstra University means the opportunity for hands-on research and training at on-campus and research sites across Long Island. Students can major in biology or urban ecology, and can specialize in more than 15 areas of study. These areas of study include pre-med, cell/molecular (the department has more than 15 areas of specialization).  Other areas for specialization are marine and freshwater biology, ecology, conservation biology and urban ecology.  Our pre-med advisor assists students interested in medicine with course selection, volunteer work and the medical school application process.

A series of biology seminars brings noted scientists for in-depth discussions of their work. Each of our faculty members offers students opportunities to work with them in their specific area of research. The department also sponsors a competitive summer fellowship for undergraduate students, during which students work with researchers on topics related to their career goals.  Every year, students are offered the chance to enroll in a study abroad program in which they spend 20 days either touring the Galapagos Islands and the Amazon rainforest or studying the marine flora and fauna in Belize.
