Emily Miethner (B.F.A. '10)
What was your favorite class, who was your favorite professor, or what is your fondest memory of Hofstra?
One of the most rewarding experiences I had at Hofstra was the night of our Second Annual Not All Artists Are Starving event. I remember looking down the stairs at the Hofstra University Club, seeing a line out the door and thinking, wow...students need this and it's making a difference. It felt really good to make that event happen with an incredible team of peers, professors, and administrators.
What was your first job after graduating from Hofstra, and what was the most valuable thing you learned there?
My first job after Hofstra was as a social media marketing coordinator at Sterling Publishing. It was a new position for Sterling so I learned not to sit back and wait for instructions but to take the initiative and start projects on my own. Some of my best experiences came from working on projects I took the lead on, which then gained support from the rest of the department. Sterling also had a great mentorship program, which solidified my belief in the importance of mentor/mentee relationships.
What is your field of specialty, and how did you come to work in the industry?
My specialty is forming communities through social media and live events. The first community I found myself organizing was The Hofstra Association of Graphic Arts, through which I organized two major networking events and countless meetings and outings. After graduation, I interned at Gawker Media and Flavorpill, and volunteered for Techies Give Back, all places where I learned major social media skills. In October 2010, I co-founded NY Creative Interns, a networking group for college students and recent grads. We've hosted more than 20 events in less than a year. All that experience, combined, led me to my current position at RecordSetter.com as the community manager. I'm learning a ton and love being a part of such a vibrant community and helping it grow.
What advice would you give current Hofstra students?
Be an amazing intern and have as many internships as you can manage. Everyone you meet will be an opportunity for something awesome in the future. Your transition after graduation will be much smoother if you develop great relationships with other interns, employees, and people in your industry.
In one word, how would you describe Hofstra?
How do you balance a full-time job at RecordSetter as well as managing NY Creative Interns?
I don't watch TV much at all, for starters. Having a really organized Google calendar and making lists of goals every day really helps as well. Oh, and sleep. It took me awhile to realize and admit, but getting 7-8 hours of sleep makes a huge difference in how productive you are. I no longer wake up after going to bed really late thinking ... wait, did I actually send that email or was it a dream?
Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
I hope to continue to run my own company and inspire creative people to find their dream careers, because that's what I'm extremely passionate about.
